    The Division of Food Chemistry and Environmental Toxicology has a broad expertise in the fields of food safety and food toxicology. The research record comprises work on the genotoxic and cytotoxic properties of food constituents and contaminants, on the role of receptor proteins in mediating cellular responses, and on the identification of signalling pathways mediating adaptive/toxic effects. The methods used comprise studies in humans, animal studies, and investigations in mammalian tissue cultures including primary and permanent cells from human and rodents. In the past, cell culture studies were aimed at elucidating effects of xenobiotics/natural constituents such as DNA damage, oxidative/antioxidative effects, receptor activation, modulation of cell growth, differentiation or apoptosis, effects on drug metabolism. The fate of xenobiotics in tissue culture, including uptake, metabolism and elimination is another topic of our work. The division is funded by the European Union, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, the Federal Ministry for Research and Technology, the former Federal Institute for Consumer Protection and Veterinary Medicine (bgvv), food and pharmaceutical industry. Research equipment is available for state-of-the-art research in molecular and cell toxicology, comprising equipment for mammalian tissue culture, analysis of gene expression (phosphoimaging, Northern blotting, real-time PCR, gene-array analysis, western blotting, immunocytochemistry), biochemical testing (UV/Vis, fluorescence and luminescence spectrometry), gene analysis (sequencing, SSCP) and analysis of metabolites (GC, HPLC, GC/LC-MS). The department has access to animal housing facilities and licensed facilities for work with hazardous chemicals and radioactive isotopes. There are no legal or commercial links between this laboratory and other partners of the project proposal.

    Prof. Dieter Schrenk, MD PhD
    , is professor of Food Chemistry and Environmental Toxicology at the University of Kaiserslautern (Germany). He is a member of Senate Commission on Food Safety (SKLM) of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), Bonn, chairman of the working group 'Natural Food Constituents' of SKLM, chairman of the research network ‘Role of Food Constituents in the Development of Chronic Diseases of the Gut and Perspectives of their Prevention by Nutrition’ funded by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research, Bonn, member of the Panel on 'Contaminants in the Food Chain' of EFSA (Parma), and of the Executive Committee of Eurotox. He also is Editor of Chemosphere/Toxicology and Risk Assessment, and member of the editorial boards of Pharmacogenetics, Toxicology, and Toxicological Sciences. In this capacity and in activities for national and international organisations such as the WHO, EFSA or DFG he regularly acts as an adviser and peer reviews publications and other scientific work.

     

    Hans-Joachim Schmitz, PhD, is assistant professor at the Department of Food Chemistry and Environmental Toxicology at the University of Kaiserslautern (Germany). He is co-author of a variety of publications on the isolation and use of liver cells for toxicological research and has an outstanding expertise in cell research, methods development and application in biochemical and genomics analyses. He also is a member of the German Committee on Effect-Related Food Analysis of BFL (Federal Institute for Food and Consumer Protection), and co-editor of 'Encyclopedia of Poisons' ('Giftlexikon').
